I’ve written a one-sentence overview of every book of the Bible. Here’s a snapshot of every book of the Bible That means if you want to know the Bible better, you’ll need to get acquainted with the 66 documents it comprises. In fact, the word “bible” comes from the Latin and Greek words for “book” ( biblia and biblos, respectively). In some ways, that makes it easier to approach the Bible: we can read it in “chunks” rather than needing to read the whole Bible at once.īut it also makes it a bit confusing. That’s because the Bible is a collection of writings from different authors writing at different times. News flash: the Bible is huge: about 611,000 words long, all divvied up across 66 smaller documents called the “books” of the Bible. ![]()

It was curated by LeWitt in collaboration with Joe Thompson, the former director of the museum, and Jock Reynolds, then the director of the Yale University Art Gallery. Mass Moca’s wall drawings were completed posthumously in 2008 as part of a collaboration between the museum, the LeWitt estate, more than 60 artists, the Williams College Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. “One of the things that we believe perpetuated the wall drawings was LeWitt’s contribution to Seth Siegelaub’s Xerox Book (1968) and the idea of this democratic effort to endlessly disperse the works,” says Susan Cross, the senior curator of the museum, who has helped steward the retrospective since 2008 and is overseeing the restoration with the LeWitt studio. LeWitt was working in sculpture and other media before starting to create wall drawings in the late 1960s, unveiling the first in Paula Cooper Gallery’s inaugural exhibition in New York in 1968, a show benefitting anti-Vietnam War causes that also featured minimal abstract works by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre and others.Īfter conceiving the wall drawings, LeWitt contracted other artists to execute the works, which are translated onto the wall from specific geometric combinations the artist described through precise but simple instructions. ![]() The panoramic installation of 105 large-scale drawings that the artist devised as diagrams between 19 spans nearly an acre and three storeys of a 19th-century mill on the museum’s campus in North Adams, Massachusetts. Those are all great ways to share and sync documents, but they aren’t good for backups. What you don’t want is something like Dropbox, Google Drive, or. (Yes I had a surge protector it pretty much liquefied.) But since my data was backed up to the cloud, I was able to get everything back. For example, I once lost a laptop to a lightning strike. This is a backup that covers that awful scenario of physical destruction. Of course, that is just another way of saying “on someone else’s computer.” In this case, I mean a server in a data center far from your home. The second backup I suggest is off-site, or in “the cloud,” as marketing departments call it. While File History works quite well in my testing, and can take the place of something like Time Machine if you go through and set it up for every folder you need to back up, Windows still doesn’t really have a utility like Time Machine. A WIRED reader tipped me off to the File History features in Windows, which performs automatic incremental backups on any folder you designate. Windows 11 offers Windows backup, which will back up most of your personal data to your Microsoft account, but it isn’t intended to fully restore your system, should a hard drive fail. Time Machine is smart too it will only back up files that have changed, so it won’t eat up all your disk space. Apple has good instructions on how to set up Time Machine so it will make daily backups to your external hard drive. It’s a wonderfully simple piece of software and possibly the best reason to buy a Mac. These days there is software that can automate all of your backup tasks. If you have to make a backup, you probably won’t. If you don’t mind a larger form factor, there’s a Western Digital 8-terabyte “desktop” version that’s not much more ( $155 at Amazon).Ī good backup system runs without you needing to do a thing. I like this 5-terabyte model ( $110 at Amazon, $108 at Best Buy), which will back up this very article later tonight (it’s backed up to the cloud as I type, more on that in a minute). Several of us here on the Gear team have had good luck with Western Digital hard drives. In my case, the company replaced the drive without question.Įven within brand names, though, some drives are better than others. What you get by sticking with the brand names is good customer service. I had a big brand-name drive fail on me recently, and it was only four months old. That said, I suggest sticking with known names like Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi. Unfortunately, what really jumps out of that data is that longevity varies more by model than by manufacturer. Backblaze, a backup company that currently stores more than 1 exabyte of data, and therefore has considerable experience with hard drives, periodically publishes its drive statistics, which have some helpful numbers to consider. If you want something small, see our guide to portable hard drives (which don’t require external power). The hardest thing about this step is figuring out which hard drive to buy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Using a larger sensor in such cameras would necessitate a larger, heavier and more expensive lens.įor general snapshots taken in good lighting conditions, cameras using these sensors may deliver perfectly acceptable results, but otherwise they can struggle to hold on to highlight detail and may produce images with a grainy, noisy texture. They're also found inside DSLR-style superzoom compacts such as the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS. Their size allows manufacturers to make very compact cameras with long lenses, such as superzoom compacts like the Panasonic ZS70 / TZ90 and Canon PowerShot SX730 HS. These used to be common across these types of cameras, but the gradual shift in focus by manufacturers towards enthusiast cameras with larger sensors means they aren't as common in new cameras. This is the smallest sensor that's commonly used in cameras today, and is typically found in budget compacts. The measurements provided are an example of one such sensor within that format. Note: not all sensors within the same category have exactly the same dimensions. Here, we take a closer look at the main sizes of sensor used in today’s cameras. This will be examined in greater detail for some of the sensor sizes below. This figure is determined by the ‘crop factor’ – that is, the number by which you need to multiply the focal length to work out the effective focal length of the combination. Similarly, a compact camera may have a 19mm lens built into it, but if the size of sensor is smaller than full-frame, it will only ever be able to offer a longer effective focal length on that body, perhaps 28mm or so. By discarding some of the peripheral areas of the lens, it ends up appearing as though you’re using a longer focal length. This is because the sensor is not large enough to take advantage of the lens to the same extent as a full-frame sensor can. A camera with a sensor that’s smaller than full-frame may be used with a lens that has a focal length of 18-55mm, but in reality the effective focal range you’ll end up with is closer to 27-82mm. To make things easier to understand, manufacturers often provide an ‘equivalent’ focal length, which uses the full-frame sensor as its reference point.Ī 18-55mm lens used on a camera with an APS-C sensor has an effective focal range of 27-82mm, although the exact length depends on the camera used. The problem here is that different lenses marked with two completely different focal lengths may provide the same effective focal range to work with when used on the bodies for which they are designed. Whether they're built into the body of a camera or supplied separately, lenses are marked with their actual focal length, rather than the effective focal length when used on a particular camera. But with interchangeable-lens cameras like DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, any lens used needs to be able to have an image circle – the diameter of the light that exits the lens – that can sufficiently cover the dimensions of the sensor. If you buy a compact camera the lens is built into the body, so there's less to think about here from a buying perspective. The size of the sensor inside a camera has a direct effect on what kind of lenses can be used with that camera. ![]() ![]() ![]() They purchased the single ticket and decided that A would be in the hall during the 1st half and B during the 2nd half. Both of them reached the hall together. Understanding the principles of diffraction in sound waves can help us design better sound systems and optimize their performance. Thus, diffraction is a fundamental property of sound waves that plays a crucial role in several applications, such as soundproofing, acoustic design, and music production. When sound waves encounter an obstacle with a curved surface, they diffract around the curved surface and create a sound shadow zone behind the obstacle. When sound waves encounter a sharp edge of an obstacle, they diffract and spread out into the region behind the obstacle, creating a shadow zone where the sound intensity is lower. When sound waves pass through a narrow slit or aperture, they diffract and create a series of interference patterns on a screen placed behind the slit. The larger the wavelength, the more significant the diffraction.ĭiffraction can be observed in several scenarios, such as: The amount of diffraction depends on the size of the obstacle or aperture and the wavelength of the sound wave. When sound waves travel through a medium, they move in a straight line, but when they encounter an obstacle or a small aperture, they bend or diffract around the edges of the obstacle. This bending of sound waves around the corners or edges of an obstacle is called diffraction. When a sound wave encounters an obstacle or passes through a small aperture, it bends around the edges and spreads out into the region behind the obstacle. Yes, phenomena of diffraction can occur in sound waves. ![]() |
